A Navy engineer Richard James invented slinky in 1943. In 1945, Slinky toys has been brought to Gimbel’s Department store in Philadelphia. At first, Richard and his wife Betty were worried that their slinky toy might not catch on, but 90 minutes later, they sold out all 400 Slinkies. Since then, there are more than 300 million Slinkies sold in the world. In 1999 United States Postal Service issued Slinky as one of the top 100 American Idol stamps.
