If you own a home or rent an apartment, be sure to follow these low-cost, common sense measures to save money:
- Lower your thermostat at night and when you’re not at home.
- Close off rooms you aren’t using.
- Weatherstrip or caulk your windows and doors, or use draft stoppers.
- Keep blinds and drapes of sun-exposed windows open in the daytime and closed at night.
- Wash only full loads of dishes and clothes.
- Move furniture, drapes and carpets away from baseboard heaters.
- Shop for the ENERGY STAR® symbol for energy efficiency when you are in the market for a major appliance.
- Air dry dishes instead of using your dishwasher’s drying cycle.
- Stop drafts — install foam gaskets behind electric outlets and switch plates on outer walls.
- When you’re done with the TV, computer, video game, radio or stereo, turn it off.
- Unplug chargers and laptop computers.
- Set your hot water heater at 120 degrees or less.
- Turn off the lights when you leave a room
