Duke to plant 1 million trees as new climate-change law looms
Duke Energy is planning to plant 1 million trees in Arkansas in anticipation of federal climate change legislation that would make carbon offset credits harder to come by. The company announced Thursday that it is the sole investor in GreenTrees, a privately-owned Virginia company that makes 70-year agreements with landowners and plants trees on their properties. Duke plans to acquire about 250,000 carbon offset credits from this investment. The company made the deal now, spokesman Gregory Efthimiou said, because federal legislation that would mandate a carbon limit is becoming more likely. If passed, the legislation would make opportunities to get offset credits much more valuable and hard to come by. The company is not disclosing how much it paid in the deal, saying it would compromise future negotiations.Andrew Dunn Pearson lands utility’s new social-media job Duke Energy named Michelle Pearson the company’s social media director Thursday, a new position to focus on connecting with customers online. Pearson was formerly the manager of Duke’s E-Channels team, which operated a Twitter feed providing updates on power outages during storms and emergencies. “We think that there are opportunities to engage,” Pearson said. “More and more people are coming to those channels.” She said she will first focus on developing the company’s strategy to expand in social media.
